The sync.atomic documentation says:

remove registeredChannelsMutex
...
This moves channel registration to an eventual consistency model,
where the in-memory datastructures (Channel and ChannelManager)
are the exclusive source of truth, and updates to them get persisted
asynchronously to the DB.
